The Best Lunch in Yass: What to Order at Trader & Co.

If you're passing through Yass on the Hume or you've just finished the school run and need somewhere to land, lunch at Trader & Co. is worth slowing down for. It's at 92 Meehan Street, open Monday to Friday until 3pm and Saturdays until 2pm, and it's the kind of place where the food is made with some care and the coffee is actually good.

This isn't a roundup of every cafe in town. It's a straightforward look at what makes Trader & Co. worth choosing when you want the best lunch in Yass — and what to order when you get there.

The Dishes That Do the Heavy Lifting

The lunch menu at Trader & Co. leans into a few things done well. There's no deep fryer trying to do too much. Most of the dishes have one or two things that lift them — a house-made element, a good sauce, an ingredient that earns its place on the plate.

The Grilled Steak Sanga is a good example. Tender grilled steak, caramelised onion, Swiss cheese, pickled cabbage, and beetroot jam, all toasted on sourdough. That combination of sweet, sharp, and savoury works. It's not fussy, but it's not boring either.

If you'd rather something lighter, the BLAT — crispy bacon, fresh cos lettuce, avocado, creamy aioli, and tomato on a potato bun — is exactly what it sounds like and exactly what you want when it's done right.

For the Table That Can't Agree

Lunch groups are rarely unanimous. Trader & Co.'s menu handles that without making anyone feel like they drew the short straw.

The Loaded Nachos are a proper plate — crunchy corn chips, house-made bean mix under melted cheddar, topped with guac, fresh salsa, and sour cream. Gluten free and vegetarian, and filling enough to be a meal on their own.

The Chicken Burger is grilled chicken breast on a potato bun with leafy greens, tomato, Spanish onion, and garlic aioli. Solid, unfussy, and it suits people who don't want to think too hard about what they're eating.

And if someone at the table is after something warming, the Winter Soup — house-made, served with toasted sourdough — is available with vegan and gluten free options. Simple, but it's made in-house and that makes a difference.

The One That Might Surprise You

The Hot-Honey Mushrooms with Crispy Kale gets ordered more than you'd expect for a mushroom dish. Button mushrooms sautéed with hot honey and crispy kale, on sourdough with house-made cashew cheese spread. It's listed as vegan-ish, and you can add a poached egg or bacon if you want to take it further. The hot honey does something interesting — it's sweet and has a bit of heat, and it makes the whole thing more interesting than it sounds on paper.

If you've written off that kind of dish before, it's worth giving it a go here.

Something for Kids

Trader & Co. has a proper kids menu, which matters when you've got people under ten to feed alongside everyone else. The Kids Cheese Toastie is a small sourdough toastie with tasty cheese — reliable, simple, and actually made on sourdough rather than white sandwich bread. There's also Kids Egg on Toast, Kids Avo Spread, and for something a bit more fun, the Kids Waffle — a Belgian waffle served with maple syrup or Nutella.

It's not a huge menu, but it covers the bases and doesn't feel like an afterthought.

Coffee Worth Staying For

Trader & Co. has its own sister roastery — Six8 Coffee Roasters — and the coffee is roasted on-site. The milk-based coffees use the Bohemian blend. Black coffees, including batch brew, use the Ethiopian single origin: smooth and fruity with a big, juicy mouthfeel. Decaf is on the menu too, and it's genuinely good — sweet and nutty, served as a proper drink rather than just an afterthought for people avoiding caffeine.

When to Come

The kitchen runs until 2pm every day, with drinks continuing until close. Monday to Friday, that's 3pm. Saturday, it's 2pm. Trader & Co. is closed on Sundays, so plan accordingly if you're driving through on the weekend.

If you're on the Hume between Sydney and Canberra, Yass is a natural stop and Meehan Street is easy to get to. Worth building in twenty minutes more than you think you'll need — not because the service is slow, but because you'll probably want a second coffee.

Come In and Eat Something Good

The best lunch in Yass doesn't need much explaining. Good ingredients, made properly, in a room that feels like somewhere rather than nowhere. That's what Trader & Co. is.

Check out the full menu before you come in, or just show up at 92 Meehan Street and order the Steak Sanga. You won't regret it.
