Places to Eat in Yass Worth Stopping For

If you're passing through on the Hume or you've just moved to town and haven't found your regular spot yet, here's a straightforward answer to where to eat in Yass: Trader & Co. on Meehan Street. It's not the only place in town, but it's the one people keep coming back to — and the one that's rated number one on TripAdvisor by the people who've actually eaten here.

This isn't a roundup of every café on the main drag. It's a closer look at what makes Trader & Co. worth the stop — the food, the vibe, and what to order depending on why you're here.

It's a Locals' Spot First

There's a difference between a café that tolerates the public and one that's genuinely built around its community. Trader & Co. is the second kind.

It sits at 92 Meehan Street, which puts it right in the middle of Yass rather than on the highway fringe. The crowd on a weekday morning is mostly locals — post-school-drop-off, tradies, people working from laptops, friends catching up. On weekends it fills up with families. If you're driving through from Sydney or Canberra, you're welcome here, but you're stepping into something that exists for the town, not for you specifically. That tends to make it better, not worse.

Hours are Monday to Friday 8am–3pm and Saturday 8:30am–2pm. Closed Sundays.

What to Order for Breakfast

The breakfast menu has enough range that almost anyone in a group can find something, without being so long it's overwhelming.

The Bacon and Egg Roll is a proper one — crispy bacon, two free range eggs on a soft potato bun, with house-made tomato relish. It's the kind of thing that earns a reputation quietly, by being exactly right every time.

If you want something lighter, the Avo & Feta Smash is a solid option. It's on toasted sourdough with leafy greens, Tassie feta, house-made dukkah, and a balsamic drizzle. There's a vegan version with cashew cheese if you need it.

For something warm and filling without being heavy, the Maple Almond Porridge does the job — particularly on a cold Yass morning, which is most of them from April to October.

If you're leaning towards something more substantial, the Zucchini Fritters with Bacon are worth a look — served with tzatziki, garlic oil, roast seeds, and sour cream.

What to Order for Lunch

The kitchen closes at 2pm daily, so lunch is very much on the table — just don't leave it too late.

The Grilled Steak Sanga is one of the stronger lunch options: tender grilled steak with caramelised onion, Swiss cheese, pickled cabbage, and beetroot jam, all toasted on sourdough. It's a proper sandwich, not a token one.

The Loaded Nachos are worth knowing about — house-made bean mix, melted cheddar, guac, fresh salsa, and sour cream on crunchy corn chips. Gluten free and vegetarian, and the kind of thing that disappears fast at a table of two.

If you want something lighter, the BLAT (bacon, lettuce, avo, tomato) on a potato bun with creamy aioli is straightforward and good.

There's also a Winter Soup — house-made vegetable soup with toasted sourdough, available with vegan and gluten-free options. On the right day, it's exactly what you want.

Bringing Kids

There's a proper kids menu, which matters when you're deciding where to stop with a car full of tired children.

Options include a kids cheese toastie, eggs on toast in a couple of sizes, smashed avo on toast, cheesy nacho chips, and a Belgian waffle with maple syrup or Nutella. Nothing exotic, everything useful.

Babyccinos are on the drinks menu too, which will matter to about half the parents reading this.

The Coffee

Trader & Co. is the café side of Six8 Coffee Roasters — the beans are roasted on-site, which means the coffee isn't an afterthought. Milk coffees are made on the Bohemian blend (smooth and sweet), and black coffees including batch brew are made on the Ethiopian single origin (smooth and fruity with a big juicy mouthfeel).

Decaf is also on the menu as a proper coffee option — organic, smooth, and sweet enough that it doesn't taste like a compromise.

Beyond the espresso menu, there are matcha lattes, chai options, hot chocolate, milkshakes, and a few seasonal specials like the Iced Maple Magic (an oat and maple iced latte) and Winter Maple Magic (the hot version). If coffee isn't your thing, you're still looked after.

Worth the Stop — or the Drive

Yass isn't short on character, but it is short on the kind of café that functions as a genuine community hub and still delivers on the food and coffee side consistently. Trader & Co. manages both, which is why the TripAdvisor rating means something — it's not driven by novelty, it's driven by people coming back.

If you're making a trip of it, it's worth noting that bookings are available for groups. You can sort that out at traderandco.com.au/bookings before you head in.

Otherwise, pull up the menu, pick your order, and we'll see you on Meehan Street — Monday to Friday from 8am, Saturday from 8:30am.
